Taking your pet with you: check that all microchip details are up to date before you leave. Pack any toys or medication your pet will need, plus paper towels and a rubbish bag for accidents. Ensure your pet is secure in the car — cats in a crate, dogs in a car harness (pet parents can be fined for an unrestrained pet). Stop every two hours for a toilet break and to stretch legs if travelling with a dog; cats should have access to a litter tray in their crate. Once you arrive, set up a safe place for them if they become overwhelmed by new people and noises.

Boarding your pet: a veterinary-based boarding facility (usually for cats) is the best option, since an emergency or illness gets immediate vet attention. Find a facility through recommendations from friends, neighbours or your vet clinic team, book early as facilities fill up around public holidays, and let the team know about any medical or dietary requirements.
